Employers & TPAs / Buyer guide

THE BUYER’S DESK / 02

Build a defensible care navigation business case

Start with employee access and the plan’s own claims. Define an eligible population, a clinically governed navigation pathway, and the full cost of implementation. Measure completed care and member experience before treating modeled savings as a financial result.

Choose a problem employees recognize

Begin with a concrete access problem: uncertainty about where to go, difficulty identifying an available provider, or a fragmented after-hours experience. Test the proposed entry point with employees before buying a broad communication campaign.

Agree who owns each handoff

Document the responsibilities of the employer, TPA, network, and clinical team. Decide who resolves eligibility mismatches and who answers a member when an option is unavailable. A new navigation layer should have a clear handoff to existing benefits support.

Budget beyond the platform fee

Include implementation, employee communications, clinical oversight, eligible transport, and internal administration. Use the planner to test what would have to be true for the program to cover those costs. Its illustrative assumptions are not NeXtriage pricing.

Define the claims review before launch

Ask your benefits adviser and TPA to agree on a comparison cohort, episode definition, follow-up window, and claims runout. Track member experience and subsequent utilization. An accepted recommendation alone does not prove a prevented emergency visit.

Evidence to bring to the conversation

Ask for a demonstration of the configured workflows, current integration scope, security review materials, and a measurement plan for your population. A feature description demonstrates intent; observed outcomes require separate evidence.
